Police shoot man dead during Saturday night traffic stop in Aurora

    AURORA | Police have released few details about a man shot dead by an Aurora police officer during a traffic stop near Smoky Hill Road and South Mobile Way late Saturday night.

    No officers were injured during the shooting, police said.

    Police said unnamed officers were conducting a traffic stop at about 11:30 p.m. and approached an adult male in his car.

    “A short time later, an officer fired his weapon at the subject,” Aurora police spokeswoman Officer Diana Cooley said in a blog post.

    The man was taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead, Cooley reported.

    “A weapon was located in the subject’s vehicle,”  according to the police blog.

    At least one officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid  leave pending the outcome of a shooting investigation, which is customary Aurora police procedure.
