5A Boys State Tennis Tournament

DENVER | A young Regis Jesuit team had a successful first round at the Class 5A boys state tennis tournament Thursday, posting a 4-2 record in play at Gates Tennis Center.

Freshman No. 2 singles player Chanon Penvari, plus the No. 2 doubles team of Steven Bummer and Jeremy Warren, the No. 3 doubles duo of Truett Davis and Alec Jotte and the No. 4 doubles tandem of Noah Warren and Joe Robertson all moved on to the second round later in the afternoon for the Raiders.

No. 3 singles player Trace Collins and the No. 1 doubles team of Nate Root and Tim D’Costa lost in the opening round.

It was a very familiar first round for the Raiders, as five of the six first round matches came against fellow Continental League opponents. Only the No. 2 doubles team of Bummer and Warren faced off against a non-league foe.

The duo opened slowly as they got the feel for Liberty’s Drew Stoltzfus and Cody Leasure, but rebounded to post a 6-4, 7-6 victory.

Penvari got the day off to a rousing start with a three-set victory over Mountain Vista’s Michael Shin, who had beaten him in three sets when they faced each other in the middle of the Continental League season.

They split sets again in the rematch, but Penvari’s confidence and improved ability to focus on each point helped him in the deciding set. Shin broke him to tie it at 4-4, but Penvari returned the favor in a game that went to deuce three times to go up 5-4 on serve.

The final game also went to deuce, but Penvari forced an error to set up match point and then hammered an ace to seal a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory. He advanced to play Cherry Creek’s Connor McPherson, who he lost to at the Cherry Creek Invitational earlier in the season.

Davis and Jotte at No. 3 doubles and Warren and Robertson at No. 4 doubles each dominated against Littleton opponents they’d also handled during the league season, posting 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1 victories, respectively.

The quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday afternoon, with winners set to play semifinals at 9 a.m. Friday.

Playbacks for third place will begin following semifinals based on which players advance to championship matches.
