ATLANTA | Nick Saban wins one title and moves on to figuring out how to get the next. It’s part of his famed Process. But Saban’s sixth national title, and fifth in nine years, was different and not just because it put him in a tie with Alabama icon Bear Bryant for the most by any major college football coach. This time one quarterback, Jalen Hurts, led the Crimson Tide into the championship game and another, freshman Tua Tagovoila, directed a second-half comeback in Monday night’s 26-23 overtime win over Georgia.

The two meet Saturday in a do-or-die game of sorts with bowl eligibility on the line. The loser goes home without a postseason and the valuable extra practices that come with it.
SAN DIEGO | One week after the NFL’s Chargers announced they were relocating to Los Angeles, San Diego State gave a five-year contract extension to coach Rocky Long, who said the Aztecs were more than up to the challenge of winning over the suddenly spurned fan base. The best way, naturally, is to continue on the course Long has put them on.
COLORADO SPRINGS | Women’s wrestling could someday be an NCAA-sanctioned sport. Wrestle Like A Girl Inc. and its partners announced on Tuesday that they have submitted a bid seeking emerging sport status from the NCAA.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. | Dabo Swinney isn’t concerned about losing more than 77 percent of his team’s offensive production from last season’s national championship team. Rather, Clemson’s 10th-year coach is brimming with confidence that the Tigers can replace quarterback DeShaun Watson and a host of other top-level players and maintain the program’s success, which includes a 34-5 record over the last three seasons with two trips to the national title game.
Spending on men’s and women’s athletic programs has doubled over the past decade across all three NCAA divisions and the greatest gap between the two can be found in Division I, according to a report released Wednesday marking the 45th anniversary of the Title IX ruling that bars discrimination based on gender. The 60-page report , released by the NCAA, suggests some progress has been made in a number of areas when it comes to participation, diversity and equality among college athletes, their coaches and their athletic directors. But it also found stark gaps remain even as spending has climbed to record levels.
