The group said Coffman’s work on veteran issues in Congress and his own military service and tours of duty in combat. The group specifically cited Coffman’s support for the Veteran Urgent Access to Mental Healthcare Act, which would guarantee mental health services for veterans who were discharged on other than honorable grounds.
“It doesn’t feel like we’re welcomed. Some of us have been living here for 30, 40 years,” Nebiyu Asfaw said. “It doesn’t feel like the America we’ve known.”

Currently veterans who were dishonorably discharged can’t access services including mental health care. The Veteran Urgent Access to Mental Healthcare Act would allow the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide initial mental health assessments and mental health care services to veterans at risk of suicide or harming others.
Coffman is set to have the public meeting on Aug. 1 at Prairie View High School in Henderson, which is in the northern portion of the Sixth Congressional District. This will be Coffman’s second town hall meeting since President Donald Trump was sworn in.
