Field Hockey: Regis Jesuit falls in opening round of state playoffs

MONUMENT | The Regis Jesuit field hockey team maintained its tradition of making the state playoffs, but couldn’t replicate last season’s appearance in the semifinals.

The Raiders qualified for the postseason for the seventh consecutive season as the No. 7 seed in the eight-team field and fell 3-0 to No. 2 Palmer Ridge on Friday at Don Breese Stadium.

Coach Spencer Wagner’s Regis Jesuit team played the Bears to a 1-0 result in the season opener back on Aug. 29, but found itself down by a goal after just one half in the rematch. Palmer Ridge (12-2-2) added two more goals in the second half and advanced to a semifinal matchup against No. 3 Colorado Academy on Oct. 25 at All-City Stadium in Denver.

Top-seeded Kent Denver and No. 4 Denver East meet in the other semifinal, with the winners playing for the state title Oct. 27.

The Raiders (8-7-1) rolled into the postseason with five wins in their last six games, a span in which they averaged 4.5 goals per contest, but failed to get on the scoreboard for only the third time all season.

Junior Regan Cadieux finished the season with a state-best 17 goals for Regis Jesuit.
