AURORA | Overland took the latest round in the evolving local football rivalry with Rangeview thanks to a 42-20 victory Friday night at Aurora Public Schools Stadium.
The Trailblazers scored on their first offensive play from scrimmage on a 56-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Luis Ruiz to junior wide receiver Jermaine Davis, which started the ball rolling on the program’s highest offensive output since a Week 8 game last season.
Senior running back Jaion Colbert rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns — including one in a run of 21 unanswered points between the second and third quarters that put Overland into the lead — while Ruiz, Vaejon Robinson and Angel Mares all collected rushing scores as coach Steve Sewell’s team moved to 2-2.
The Trailblazers won for the fourth time in the last five meetings of the Aurora teams since 2013, when they prevailed over the Raiders in overtime in a Class 5A state playoff first round contest.
Rangeview, which won last season’s meeting 47-39 in a shootout, took a 14-7 lead into the second quarter after senior quarterback Jaelin Odegard hit senior Josiah Allen with a 40-yard touchdown strike and senior David Aggrey scooped up a muffed punt and scored.
Coach Brandon Alconcel’s Raiders (0-4) lost Odegard to injury in the second quarter, however, and were held off the scoreboard again until backup quarterback Dayzawn Jackson rushed for a three-yard touchdown in the third quarter to pull his team within 28-21.
Colbert scored with 4:04 left to give the Trailblazers some breathing room and Mares’ 6-yard plunge with just over a minute left produced the final margin.
Overland’s defense forced five fumbles — and recovered four of them — while it also collected three interceptions against Odegard and Jackson.
Rangeview hopes to find its first victory against rival Gateway (2-2) in the Anvil game, set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at APS Stadium, while Overland heads out to face Legacy (3-1) on the same day at 7 p.m. at the North Stadium.
