AURORA | The Rangeview boys golf team got off to a strong start to the 2012 season on Thursday, taking the first EMAC South meet by 20 strokes.
Led by the tandem of junior Mitchell Votry and freshman Raymond Simanjintak — who each shot 17-over-par 81s — the Raiders finished with a team score of 343 in the tournament at Springhill Golf Course and came in well front of runner-up Gateway.
Hinkley had just two players in the tournament, but senior Daniel Del Real led the field individually with a 13-over-par 77, three shots better than Gateway senior Cole Harding for top honors. It was a near carbon copy of last season’s opening tournament on the same course when Del Real won with a 78.
Next were Rangeview’s top three players, Votry — who was 24 strokes better than a season earlier — and Simanjintak and frosh Jonathan Kim (90).
Raiders coach Merlin Johnson was impressed with the debut of his freshmen, especially Simanjintak, who had a few three-putts that raised his score.
Gateway was led by last season’s team MVP Harding, who was 14 strokes better than the previous season, followed by Joseph Miller (91) and Cody Coldiron (92).
Aurora Central and Hinkley did not have enough finishers to register a team score. The Trojans were paced by Marquinn McGary’s 94.
Adams City had just one entry in the tournament, Chaz Garcia, and he didn’t finish his round.
The first of two EMAC major tournaments, which include both the North and South divisions, is Aug. 16 at Meadow Hills Golf Course in Aurora.
