Season highlights: The Cherokee Trail boys basketball team came into the 2016-17 season hoping to match the success of the previous year, when the Cougars advanced to the Great 8 round of the Class 5A state playoffs. Coach Morgan Gregory’s team certainly posted some significant victories, but a spate of injuries hurt their ability to win games in stretches and ultimately led to a difficult position in the 5A playoffs, which ended with a second-round loss at Rampart. Due to losses from graduation, Gregory counted on junior Deon Barfield to step in an play some different roles this season, especially in terms of ball handling and defense. An energetic shot-blocker and rebounder off the bench last season, Barfield brought those things and more, racked up 3.0 assists per contest and though he wasn’t depended on to score, still finished with an average of 8.0 points per game. The All-Centennial League second team selection will play on Team East in the second A-Town All-Star Boys Game.
