AURORA | The Grandview football team continued its recent run of success against Cherry Creek with a 17-6 victory Friday night at Legacy Stadium in the A-Town Game of the Week.
No longer both members of the Centennial League for football due to realignment, the Wolves and Bruins got together for another tight battle and coach John Schultz’s team prevailed for the sixth time in the past seven meetings of the two powerhouse programs.
Senior quarterback Gunnar Lamphere — the A-Town Player of the Game — moved the chains all night and scored a 5-yard touchdown in the third quarter that gave Grandview (3-1) — ranked seventh in the latest Associated Press Class 5A media poll — the insurance it needed on a night when its defense posted another outstanding effort against the sixth-ranked Bruins.
Senior running back Hayden Blubaugh opened the scoring with a 57-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter to give the Wolves the lead for good.
Cherry Creek (2-2) got a short rushing touchdown from Trey Windham late in the second quarter, but missed the point after kick to trail 7-6.
Senior Ben Montgomery nailed a 30-yard field goal with just 22 seconds left in the half for Grandview.
Grandview returns to action on another A-Town Game of the Week vs. neighborhood rival Cherokee Trail (2-2) at 7 p.m. Sept. 29. The game will be live streamed by StreamItSports.
