The House Republicans revealed their priorities and values this week despite their strong protests against “government spending.” They have chosen to give $4.3 trillion in tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans and corporations, and to preserve defense spending.
To protect these spending priorities, they have chosen to severely cut programs which address the needs of the poorest Americans: $33 billion in SNAP nutritional benefits, Child Tax Credits for 5.5 million children of low-income working families; Medicaid and CHIP benefits for 14 million children, etc. These cuts, if finally enacted, will speed up the race to the bottom for America’s poorest, and increase poverty from the current 15%, which is the highest it has been since 1993. NONE of these cuts will be used for deficit reduction.
Budgets reflect values. The American Catholic Bishops have said that this budget fails a basic moral test. Other Christians have said that it cannot be justified in Christian terms. I do not believe the values expressed in these budget cutes are the values of most Americans, regardless of party affiliation.
These priorities reflect Congress’s campaign funding sources: the wealthiest Americans, the corporations which are shipping their jobs overseas, the military-industrial complex. The Republicans in Congress have no interest in good government nor in the needs of the American people.
Tell your representative and senators to get their priorities straight and not allow this budget which will harm our country in so many ways.
