Former Commerce Secretary Gutierrez touts Romney

DENVER | One of Mitt Romney’s backers is telling Colorado Hispanics that the Republican candidate favors increased legal immigration to the United States.

On a “tele-town hall” with Hispanic families Wednesday evening, former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez acknowledged that Romney is polling poorly with Hispanics. He said Romney wants to mend a broken immigration system to help U.S. businesses find legal workers from abroad. But Gutierrez added that the campaign sees Hispanic voters as driven by the same issues as other Americans: the economy, education and energy.

Gutierrez said, “We do not believe Hispanic Americans should be lumped in a different group.”

Romney has struggled to appeal to Hispanic voters after embracing a hard line stance on illegal immigration in the GOP primary.
