CU tells faculty no class cancellations over guns

The warning comes a day after Professor Jerry Peterson said he plans to cancel class if he ever learns any of his students are carrying firearms

BOULDER | University of Colorado Chancellor Phil DiStefano is telling faculty members they have no right to cancel classes if one of their students is lawfully carrying a gun.

The warning comes a day after Professor Jerry Peterson said he plans to cancel class if he ever learns any of his students are carrying firearms.

According to the Boulder Daily Camera (http://goo.gl/X0gz8) DiStefano warned Tuesday that any faculty members who do so will be in violation of their contracts and could face disciplinary action.

The Colorado Supreme Court has ruled that students with conceal-carry permits are allowed to bring guns into classrooms and labs.

Peterson said Tuesday he still stands by his classroom policy because a student with a gun would be a classroom distraction.
