Last year, Keith Rabin Jr. took time off from his full-time duties as the executive artistic director of the Aurora-based Ignite Theatre company to star in the Vintage production of the puppet-based musical Avenue Q. The show, directed by Bernie Cardell, earned praise from critics (including myself ) and enjoyed a lengthy run at the old Vintage site in Denver.
While Rabin is keeping mum about Ignite’s 2013 season until later this summer, he has revealed that he’ll be reprising his Avenue Q role on the Aurora Fox studio theater stage later this summer, along with the full cast from the successful Vintage run.
Rabin announced the production in advance of the company’s annual fundraiser gala. The rest of the company’s 2012 season includes productions of the musicals Spring Awakening, Sweeney Todd and Next to Normal.
The full text of Rabin’s announcement follows:
Hello friends and family of Ignite Theatre,
“It’s summer and probably the most exciting and the busiest time of the year for us! We are preparing for our theatrical fundraiser event The Awakening which will then bring us to our annual summer cast retreat at Indian Mountain and then we open the biggest production Ignite Theatre has ever put on the Aurora Fox stage; The regional premiere of Spring Awakening. We are also in pre-production/audition stages for Sweeney Todd coming to the Aurora Fox this Halloween!
Summer also marks another exciting time, it’s a time where we select, solidify and announce our 2013 season! Season selection is one of the things I love most about Artistic Directing. 2012 was an incredibly bold season for us! Bringing the Denver theatre community some of the biggest shows of our time! 2013 will prove to be just as big, just as sexy and a perfect fit in with Ignite Theatre’s culture of productions. 2013 will nonetheless hold something for everyone.
While our entire 2013 season will be announced at the opening night Gala, I am just too excited to leave you all with nothing, which is why I am so very proud to announce that Ignite Theatre will be bringing back to Denver the wildly successful Avenue Q at the Aurora Fox studio theatre. BUT that’s not all…We are so honored that we will be featuring the entire original Denver cast from Vintage Theatre’s four star production. Avenue Q is by far my #1 favorite musical of all time and I have been truly blessed to be a part of the original production that was so perfectly produced by our new neighbors at the Vintage. I felt that Denver was not ready for this incredible production to be over…and I am sure I speak on behalf of the entire cast when I say that we weren’t ready for it to be over either. Bernie Cardell will be reprising his role as Production Director and Midge McMoyer Smith will be taking on the role of Musical Director.
My passion has been ignited to bring this community a unique, fresh and hip approach to producing musical theatre, and we will continue to blaze trails with that mindset through 2013 and beyond!!
