GRAND JUNCTION | Classification doesn’t seem to matter to Sydney Gillespie.

The Regis Jesuit sophomore standout posted the second top-seven place of her career in as many state tournaments as she finished tied for seventh in the Class 5A girls state golf tournament, which finished up Tuesday at Tiara Rado Golf Course.

Gillespie — who tied for 5th in the 4A state tournament last season — carded the best round of any of the seven Aurora players over two days — a 4-over-par 76 — in the final round to finish with a total of 157. Grandview freshman Morgan Sahm finished one stroke behind Gillespie for top honors among city players.

Freshman Mary Weinstein and senior Sofia Vigil combined with Gillespie to give Regis Jesuit a team score of 486, good enough for third in the 14-team field behind winner Cherry Creek and runner-up Arapahoe.

AURORA | The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the state prison system aiming to find out details about how the state plans to kill Nathan Dunlap.

The Department of Corrections has not said publicly what mix of drugs will be used to kill Dunlap, who gunned down four people at an Aurora Chuck E. Cheese restaurant in 1993.

Lawyers for the ACLU said DOC’s refusal to disclose details about their execution plan violate the public’s right to know.

“By refusing to disclose the details of the execution procedure, including the drug or drugs that may be used and how they are obtained, as well as information about the companies that may be supplying the chemicals, CDOC infringes, without adequate justification, on the public’s legitimate right to information about how its government operates with regard to one of its most serious undertakings,” ACLU of Colorado Legal Director Mark Silverstein said in a statement announcing the lawsuit Tuesday.

Dunlap is scheduled to be executed in August. If the execution goes through, it will be the first in Colorado since 1997 and just the second since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstituted the death penalty in the 1970s.

Lawyers for Dunlap have already challenged the state’s execution procedures, but those efforts have largely failed.

In April, the state court of appeals rejected the defense’s arguments that DOC didn’t follow state rules in establishing their lethal injection protocols and that details about how an execution will be carried out remain secret. The details about carrying out a lethal injection are the DOC director’s responsibility, the courts said, and judge’s don’t have jurisdiction over those details.

The defense has appealed that ruling to the Colorado Supreme Court.

The ACLU lawsuit, filed in Denver District Court, comes after prison officials rejected an ACLU request for communications between DOC and compounding pharmacies, as well as a document outlining the execution protocol and training given to prison staff.

The documents are important, the DOC argued, because they could lead to further discussion of the state’s death penalty and the “ethical implications of pharmacists preparing and providing execution drugs.”

Colorado law mandates that executions be carried out via lethal injection and according to the DOC, executioners use a lethal cocktail of sodium thiopental, pancuronium bromide and potassium chloride.

But experts say thiopental is no longer available, so states have to find a different mix of drugs for their executions. The DOC has not said publicly what mix of drugs they plan to use to execute Dunlap.

The ACLU said prison officials last month sent a letter to pharmacists requesting “sodium thiopental, pentobarbital, pancuronium bromide, potassium chloride, or similar drug or drugs that the CDOC can purchase.”

That request, the ACLU argued, could be a sign that DOC plans to use a three-drug cocktail to kill Dunlap, even though state law calls for just one drug.

Three-drug cocktails have garnered criticism in recent years from death penalty opponents who say they caue extreme pain. A judge in 2006 halted executions California because of those concerns and that state’s death penalty remains in legal limbo as courts decide its legality.

AURORA | An Aurora cop who was demoted from lieutenant down to officer is asking the city’s Civil Service Commission to reverse his punishment.

Officer Paul Swanson was demoted in 2011 amid allegations that he wasn’t showing up for his assignment with the Metro Gang Task Force, but still filing for overtime pay. Swanson has been with the Aurora Police Department for 25 years.

Matt Cain, Civil Service Commission administrator, said the commission has a few options, including reversing the decision to demote him. They could also make the demotion less severe and rule Swanson should have been demoted to a rank above officer, such as detective or sergeant.

The hearing is open to the public and scheduled to last all week, Cain said.

The commission has overturned a decision by the police chief in similar circumstances a handful of times in recent years, drawing the ire of some at city hall. In one case, involving an officer fired for several violations, including shooting at a moving vehicle, the city has appealed the commission’s ruling to Arapahoe County District Court.

MOORE, Okla. | The parents and guardians stood in the muddy grass outside a suburban Oklahoma City church, listening as someone with a bullhorn called out the names of children who were being dropped off — survivors of a deadly tornado that barreled through their community.

For many families, the ordeal ended in bear hugs and tears of joy as loved ones reunited. Others were left to wait in the darkness, hoping for good news while fearing the worst.

At least 20 children are among the more than 50 reported dead so far in Moore, the Oklahoma City suburb ravaged by Monday’s tornado that packed winds of up to 200 mph. The twister reduced one elementary school to a heaping mound of rubble and heavily damaged another while also flattening block after block of homes. Officials said early Tuesday the death toll could rise by as many as 40.

At St. Andrews United Methodist Church, parents stared into the distance as they waited, some holding the hands of young children who were missing siblings.

Tonya Sharp and Deanna Wallace sat at a table in the church’s gymnasium waiting for their teenage daughters. As Sharp and Wallace spoke, a line of students walked in.

Wallace spotted her 16-year-old daughter, who came quickly her way and jumped into her mother’s arms, pushing her several steps backward in the process. But Sharp didn’t see her daughter, a 17-year-old who has epilepsy. She worried her daughter hadn’t taken her medicine.

“I don’t know where she’s at,” Sharp said. Later, she went to speak to officials who helped her register so she could be notified as soon as her daughter was found.

Shelli Smith had to walk miles to find her children. She was reunited with her 14-year-old daughter, Tiauna, around 5 p.m. Monday, but hadn’t yet seen her 16-year-old son, TJ, since he left for school that morning.

TJ’s phone had died, but he borrowed a classmate’s phone to tell his mother where he was. However, Smith couldn’t get to him due to the roadblocks. So she parked her car and started walking.

It took her three hours, but a little after sunset, she found him. She grabbed her son and squeezed him in a tight hug that lasted for several seconds before letting go. TJ hugged his sister, and then hugged his mom again.

The family had a long walk back to their car and then home, but she said she didn’t mind.

“I was trying to get him and they wouldn’t let me,” she said, adding later: “I was like, ‘You know what? I’m going to get my son.’”

Renee Lee summed up the struggle for many parents with multiple children — find the ones who they hadn’t yet seen, while calming the younger ones they had with them.

Lee is the mother of two daughters Sydney Walker, 16, and Hannah Lee, 8. When the storm came, she tried to pick Sydney up from school. Sydney told her on the phone that they wouldn’t let her come in. While Lee and her younger daughter waited in their home, which wasn’t hit, Sydney was safe in the room at a local high school.

Lee said she believed Sydney wasn’t hurt and seemed resigned to the severe weather outbreaks.

“There’s been so many of them, it doesn’t even faze me,” she said. “You just do what you gotta do. It’s part of living here.”

MOORE, Okla. | I left the office in Oklahoma City as soon as I saw the tornado warnings on TV. I had photographed about a dozen twisters in the past decade, and knew that if I didn’t get in my car before the funnel cloud hit, it would be too late.

By the time I reached Moore, all I could see was destruction. I walked toward a group of people standing by a heaping mound of rubble too big to be a home. A woman told me it had been a school.

I expected chaos as I approached the piles of bricks and twisted metal where Plaza Towers Elementary once stood. Instead, it was calm and orderly as police and firefighters pulled children out one by one from beneath a large chunk of a collapsed wall.

Parents and neighborhood volunteers stood in a line and passed the rescued children from one set of arms to another, carrying them out of harm’s way. Adults carried the children through a field littered with shredded pieces of wood, cinder block and insulation to a triage center in a parking lot.

They worked quickly and quietly so rescuers could try to hear voices of children trapped beneath the rubble.

Crews lifted one boy from under the wall and were about to pass him along the human chain, but his dad was there. As the boy called out for him, they were reunited.

In the 30 minutes that I was outside the destroyed school, I photographed about a dozen children pulled from the rubble.

I focused my lens on each one of them. Some looked dazed. Some cried. Others seemed terrified.

But they were alive.

I know that some students were among those who died in the tornado, but for a moment, there was hope in the devastation.

The fact that you can have nine congressional hearings and uncover nothing

In the now-infamous “47 Percent” video secretly captured during a Mitt Romney fundraising speech, the GOP hopeful gleefully mentioned Jimmy Carter’s Iran Hostage Crisis moment and admitted, “By the way, if something of that nature presents itself, I will work to find a way to take advantage of the opportunity.”

On September 11, 2012, he got his “opportunity.” Our embassy in Benghazi, Libya was overtaken and four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, were killed. Mitt condemned the President of the United States that same day, suggesting that Obama “sympathized with the attackers.” That’s right. The man who made the call to shoot Osama bin Laden in the head was suddenly a terrorist sympathizer because Romney wanted to be Reagan and needed a Carter.

Would cheerfully ginning up the events in Benghazi win Romney the White House? No, his accusations were offensive and demonstrably untrue.

But losing an election means nothing to Republicans. They’ve had nine congressional hearings about Benghazi. What have they uncovered? The fact that you can have nine congressional hearings and uncover nothing.

According to the Global Terrorism Database amassed by the University of Maryland’s National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, there were 64 attacks on diplomatic targets during the Bush Administration. Still, former veep Dick Cheney said of Benghazi, “I think it’s one of the worst incidences, frankly, that I can recall in my career.” Having the memory of a goldfish must be very soothing.

Benghazi is a cynical attempt to gain traction with a nontroversy. The more Congress spends time investigating, the less time they have to spend being ineffective at negotiating with the President. In other words, doing their jobs. Under John Boehner’s leadership the 112th Congress passed just 219 bills that became laws. The least since we’ve been counting; half the amount of a normal Congress in a two-year term.

But what about all the other scandals!?

Since the president who touted torture as a foreign policy, lied us into two quagmires and outed an undercover CIA agent in retaliation for her husband’s New York Times op/ed, has been out of office for a couple of years, our bar for scandal is pretty low.

The IRS uproar is an example. In the wake of Citizens United, the only agency with the authority to oversee tax exemptions has every right to be skeptical of non-profit 501(c)(4)s. These groups, after all, are begging for a government handout under the guise of providing “social welfare.” Plus they’re allowed the anonymity of their donors. Some tea partiers want to see all welfare recipients take drug tests, you’d think a couple of extra questions on an application would be warranted. According to the Inspector General’s report, of the 300 groups who were flagged by the Cincinnati IRS office for greater scrutiny, only 100 were tea party groups. The other two-thirds—the vast majority of those flagged? Liberal groups. Other non-profits. Has the tea party fallen victim to the worst injustice since colonialism, slavery and the Inquisition combined? Most definitely.

Is this a scandal? Meh. Will this exist everlastingly in the mouth foam of those with Obama-as-Hitler placards? You bet!

The Department of Justice bypassing courts and seizing Associated Press phone records is this week’s only real scandal, the only breaking news story that deals with a violation of Constitutional rights. It’s a clear infringement of the free press. It also happens to be a violation that George W. Bush committed as a matter of policy. The right wing was fine with it when a Republican did it.

But now that it’s Obama’s DOJ it’s a bit less palatable.

The difficulty for the right-wing Indignation Industrial Complex is that they don’t like the press. They only like their press. But they also dislike Obama.

Getting the right wing up in arms over the DOJ intimidating a mainstream media outlet — or even more to the point — a cracking down on whistleblowers within the government — could be tricky. Because the enemy of your enemy isn’t as intriguing as innuendo and just making stuff up.

Or as a tea partier I was on television with this week put it, “We still haven’t seen the birth certificate yet!”
