The Music Man opens the

Candlelight’s 10th Season

September 7 – November 5, 2017

The Candlelight Dinner Playhouse is proud to present Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” based on Willson’s recollection of his own childhood growing up in small town in Iowa. Willson developed “The Music Man” after encouragement from friend Frank Loesser (composer-lyricist of Guys and Dolls). “The Music Man” premiered on Broadway on December 19, 1957 and ran for over 1300 performances in its original run; it also enjoyed a heralded revival in 2000 staring Craig Bierko. Nominated for 17 Tony® Awards, “The Music Man” is considered by many to be one of the greatest shows in the Musical Theatre cannon. “The Music Man” also makes its triumphant return to the Candlelight Stage as “The Music Man” opened the Candlelight in June of 2008.

“The Music Man” follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band that he vows to organize – this, despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall. By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic and touching, “The Music Man”is family entertainment at its best. Meredith Willson’s, Tony Award-winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation.

Candlelight favorite Bob Hoppe (Don Lockwood in Singing in the Rain) plays Professor Harold Hill alongside Alisha Winter-Hayes as Marian Paroo. The cast includes Scotty Shaffer as Marcellus Washburn, RJ Wagner as Charley Cowel. Annie Dwyer and T.J. Mullin (both formerly of Heritage Square Music Hall) are joined together again as Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn and the Mayor.
