AURORA | Another fantastic year of prep sports took place around Aurora in 2017, which was highlighted by a sweep of the Class 5A boys team and individual state golf championships. Here are some of the finest moments from the second half of a year that saw a combined 18 state championships plus 28 runner-up finishes for Aurora prep teams and individuals.

DENVER | The final day of the Class 5A boys state tennis tournament included a whole lot of mathematical possibilities for the Regis Jesuit boys tennis team. The Raiders went into Saturday’s championship round of the three-day tournament trailing Fairview by two points and Cherry Creek by with 17 potential points in front of them, with several different scenarios leading to their first state championship since 2010.

In 2010, a veteran-laden Regis Jesuit boys tennis team absolutely dominated its way to the Class 5A state championship. Loaded from top to bottom, the Raiders won four championships, had six finalists and racked up twice as many points as runner-up Boulder. That was the last time Cherry Creek failed to win the 5A state championship and the Bruins could have another challenge on their hands from Regis Jesuit at this season’s 5A state tournament Oct. 12-14 at Gates Tennis Center in Denver.

Big points can come from singles success at the Class 5A boys state tennis tournament and Regis Jesuit coach Laura Jones thinks she might be able to grab some this season. Since 2010, when the Raiders rolled to the 5A state championship as a team, the program’s singles players have found a tough road at state, while outstanding doubles play has helped them regularly remain somewhere in the top eight as a team.
