Another fantastic year of prep sports took place around Aurora in 2017, which was highlighted by a sweep of the Class 5A boys and girls state basketball championships. Here are some of the finest moments from the first half of a year that saw a combined 18 state championships plus 28 runner-up finishes for Aurora prep teams and individuals:
The Cherry Creek team that won the 2017 Class 5A boys lacrosse state title may go down as one of the best teams Colorado has ever seen. Regis Jesuit — which fell to the Bruins in the 5A state championship game — wasn’t far behind, however. Coach Jim Soran’s Raiders remained in the state’s pantheon of elite teams with their fourth consecutive trip to the state title game, something no other Colorado program can currently boast. The 2017 Aurora Sentinel All-Aurora Boys Lacrosse Team, as selected by the Sentinel in conjunction with balloting of Aurora coaches, includes many of the whopping 42 players that earned all-conference honors across the Centennial and South Suburban leagues.

LAKEWOOD | After two days, three venues and a considerable amount of logistics, the Regis Jesuit boys lacrosse team finally punched its ticket to the Class 5A state championship game Thursday afternoon.
AURORA | Before the lightning arrived, the Regis Jesuit boys lacrosse team brought the thunder Wednesday night. The Raiders ripped off seven consecutive goals to take a 10-5 lead in the fourth quarter of their Class 5A semifinal contest against Arapahoe at Legacy Stadium before the teams were sent to locker room due to lightning in the area.
Come this time of year, the Regis Jesuit and Arapahoe boys lacrosse teams know each other all too well. Long established among the handful of elite programs in Colorado, the Raiders and Warriors met in last season’s Class 5A state championship game — won by Regis Jesuit — and will face off again in the deep rounds of the state playoffs for the seventh time in the past nine years.
