“Iceberg lettuce is iceberg lettuce, but there are so many different kinds of tomatoes that we strive for perfection in a number of directions,” said George Ball, chairman and chief executive officer of W. Atlee Burpee & Co., in Warminster, Pennsylvania. “There are cherries, small round salad tomatoes, slicers and paste, among others.
“If I were to eat this thinking it is a regular hamburger, I might think it’s spoiled,” said Byron Champlin, a city councilor in Concord, New Hampshire, after taking a bit of a “beefless” burger patty made by Gardein.
“We are not making a veggie burger. We’re creating meat without using animals,” said Brown, a former Stanford scientist who has been scanning plants in search of compounds that can help recreate meat.
“There’s not very many being landed right here in Casco Bay,” said Todd, who is still fishing for lobsters.
“As soon as the sun comes out, it starts melting, or we have a heavy rain,” Goodwin said. “Basically, it’s the rain that deteriorates the ice real quick. We don’t have enough time to hunt.”
Without providing details, the FDA said in statement it worked with Hampton Creek to address the issues cited in its letter, and that it considers the matter to be resolved.
“Color is a big factor,” said Robert Westerfield, a horticulturist with University of Georgia Extension. “People are very color-conscious. Most peppers in the garden are green but if you leave them in the ground long enough, they change colors. They sell a lot better with color.”
“I have to get enough food to last me a whole month,” said Hill, a retiree who likes to cook chicken and green beans. “It hurt us really badly when they closed because we depended on the Schnucks for medication and my food there. It was a lot of people hurt, not just me.”
