“It’s really about opening up a conversation with the idea that ‘Water is all we have,’ which is our tagline, because that’s all we’re serving,” Matteson said. “And then the conversation goes from there.”
Cornelian cherry is a relative of the flowering dogwood, and eventually grows to a similar height of about 25 feet. The tree is not at all finicky about soil, and it transplants easily, grows moderately fast, lives a long time and has no serious pest problems.
“This creates a patchwork of training and won’t give consumers any assurance that the producer they’re buying from has taken any basic food-safety courses,” said Brent Boydston of the Colorado Farm Bureau, which didn’t oppose but also didn’t support the bill.
The citrus that offers the most bang for your buck as a potted plant is kumquat. (Once its own genus, Fortunella, it was recently deemed close enough to oranges, grapefruits, lemons and the like to be moved into their shared genus, Citrus, and now goes under the name Citrus japonica.)
“Cosmic Crisp is the first big release the Washington industry is going to have all to itself.” said Kate Evans, a lead scientist at WSU’s Tree Fruit Research & Extension Center.
“If you’re looking to eliminate trouble spots, the thing to keep in mind is that the bulk of herbs and a lot of the fruits do best in full sun,” Miller said. “Some will be just as colorful in partial shade, although they won’t bear as much.”
“To be on the safe side, you don’t want to over-harvest, so it’s good to wait at least two years after planting,” Aegerter said. “You don’t want to take them too early. You want those underground crowns (year-old root systems) to build up a carbohydrate reserve.”
“There’s always the potential from contamination, whether you grow your own food or buy it at the market,” said Marisa Bunning, an extension food safety specialist at Colorado State University.
“The food system needs to be designed around technology and equipment that’s available today,” says Brad McNamara, Freight Farms’ CEO and co-founder. “It was designed 100 years ago without the right technology to reach the level that it needs to. The whole system needs to be modernized.”
