DENVER | Rashaan Salaam’s Heisman Trophy will be sold in an online auction next month with a portion of the proceeds benefiting research into a degenerative brain disease found in nearly 200 football players. SCP Auctions announced Tuesday that bidding will open Jan. 8 and end Jan. 20.

LOS ANGELES | The father of UCLA guard LiAngelo Ball says he’s withdrawing his son from school so he can prepare to play in the NBA. LaVar Ball says in a TV interview his “grand plan” is for all three sons to play for the Los Angeles Lakers. LiAngelo, along with fellow freshmen Jalen Hill and Cody Riley, have been indefinitely suspended for their participation in a shoplifting incident during the Bruins’ trip to China last month. They are barred from all team activities.

Tennessee’s search for a replacement for Butch Jones has resulted in turmoil, with fan protests, the firing of athletic director John Currie and the hiring of former Vols coach Philip Fulmer as AD. After being turned down by several coaches, Tennessee is still searching.
AIR FORCE ACADEMY | Fisher DeBerry wants to clear the air: His triple-option Air Force teams were very much passing oriented. “About every play,” the retired coach said. “The only difference is it happened to be a pitch behind the line of scrimmage.” DeBerry loves that jest, and used it all the time whenever his Falcons followers complained the team didn’t throw enough.

DENVER | Daniel Amigo scored 22 points with 10 rebounds and Denver topped Wyoming 88-78 on Wednesday night. It was Amigo’s fourth double-double this season for the Pioneers (3-4). Jake Holtzmann added 20 points, Jake Pemberton had 19 points and Joe Rosga had 18 points and led the team with 12 rebounds.
